CoSMo Methodology

... a HOWTO guide to CoSMo

The HOWTO guide document is a possible illustration of the process of modelling a system with the complex system approach as proposed by the CoSMo platform. It scenarizes the typical activity of a domain modeler. In order to illustrate this modelling process we consider our input is a description of a biological phenomenom previously constituted by a domain expert. Starting from this document we shall decompose the different modelling stages that the domain modeler could possibly go through in order to formalise a first coarse conceptual model.

Preview of HOWTO contents :

  • Introduction
    • Building blocks: entities
    • Rules are local
    • Neighbouring entities: "local" interaction
    • No pushing to neighbours

  • Starting point: description of a phenomenom
  • Getting the first picture: a modelling first pass
    • Entities: the model building blocks
      • Combing for nouns: a first list potential entities
    • Abstracting instances and catogies
    • Relationships between entities
      • Compounding (containment/grouping): a first entity relationship
      • Interaction: a second entity relationship
      • Interaction versus compounding: a relationship between relationships

  • Focusing on the details: a modelling second pass
    • Precise definition of an entity
      • Particle or quantity ? Micro vs macro ?
      • An entity attributes: encoding the state

  • Common modeling pitfalls
